Our intention in everything we do is to embody the essence of community. We want our store to be a space where everyone feels welcome, especially those on the “outside” – a space where people gather to enjoy the company of others. Essentially, a place “where everybody knows your name.” Thus, in our name and design we aimed to capture the spirit of an Old English Pub – literally a “public house” – where members of the community gather to share stories, share life, and connect with one another.
According to Urban Dictionary, the term “Gray Land” comes from a term used in games, such as Risk, to refer to “a territory or piece of land that trades hands between ownership so much, everyone stops caring who owns it.” When we considered that the residents of such a Grayland, Graylanders, if you will, might end up feeling rejected and disregarded, as well, we decided those outliers were exactly who we wanted to welcome into our space.
The term “guilded” is an adjective we made up to capture the idea of bringing these Graylanders into their own place of belonging – a guild of game-lovers who have each other’s back. Thus, what we’re saying in our name is that we’re going into this unwanted space and to bring those in it together under one name, one community, and one goal – to support and engage one another in a hobby we all love.
Welcome to The Guilded Grayland – we’re happy to have you!
